Here are some helpful tips to get you started:
- Create a study schedule that works for you: Take into consideration your commitments, such as work or family, and determine a realistic amount of time you can devote to studying each day. Remember to include breaks and rest days to avoid burnout and to allow yourself time to recharge. Using a physical planner (like my favorite one from The Happy Planner) or a digital calendar such as the iPhone calendar or Google Calendar can help create an efficient schedule.
- Utilize study groups: It's common to find certain areas of the material challenging, but don't worry - you're not alone. Take the time to review the material thoroughly and make sure you understand the concepts before moving on to the next topic. If you're still struggling, reach out to your professors or study group for additional support.
- Practice questions: Practice exams can also help you get familiar with the exam format and pacing, which can give you an advantage on exam day. During my exam preparation, I utilized two different platforms - UWorld and Nursing.com. Although both platforms offer unique features, the choice between the two depends on your preferred learning style. UWorld primarily focuses on providing practice questions with clear rationales, and you can choose which categories you wish to focus on. On the other hand, Nursing.com provides practice questions alongside videos that you can watch if you answer a question incorrectly. I found Nursing.com more helpful because of the video feature, which helped me understand the concept better.
- Practice exams: Taking practice exams is crucial for exam preparation. Both of the websites mentioned above provide practice exams that offer valuable insights into how you might perform on the actual exam day. I recommend taking one practice exam at the beginning of your studying process to identify the areas that need the most improvement. Then, take another halfway through your preparation and a final one at the end to boost your confidence. During these practice exams, it's important to replicate the actual test environment as much as possible. Have a snack beforehand and only bring your water bottle to your desk. Allocate the same amount of time to complete the practice exam as you would for the actual exam.
- Remember to take care of yourself during this process: Get plenty of rest, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly. A healthy body and mind will help you stay focused and alert during your exam. Don't forget to take breaks and do things that you enjoy, such as spending time with friends and family or engaging in hobbies.
- The day before and of the exam: On the day before the exam, try not to cram. By this point, you already have all the knowledge you need, and cramming will only cause more stress. Ensure that you stay hydrated and eat nutritious meals throughout the day. Also, engage in activities that will keep your mind occupied, such as spending time with your family or taking a walk outside. It is important to get enough sleep, so go to bed early. On the morning of the exam, make sure you have a filling breakfast and stay hydrated so that you do not feel hungry during the exam. Leave your house early and give yourself ample time to get to the test center, so that you are not worried about traffic or getting lost. Before you walk into the test center, take a deep breath and reassure yourself by saying, “I’ve got this!”.
In conclusion, studying for the NCLEX is a crucial step in every nurse's journey to becoming licensed. It requires dedication, perseverance, and a comprehensive understanding of the nursing profession. By devoting ample time and energy to studying, aspiring nurses can enhance their knowledge, strengthen their critical thinking skills, and ultimately increase their chances of passing the exam. While the journey may be challenging, it is important to remember that successful completion of the NCLEX opens up endless opportunities and paves the way for a rewarding career in nursing. So, embrace the challenge, study diligently, and remain confident in your abilities, knowing that all your hard work will pay off.
